The Shield of Athena Family Services is a non-profit community based organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and children victims of conjugal and family violence, particularly those coming from ethnic and Anglophone communities. The Shield offers services in a wide variety of languages and uses an approach which is both culturally and linguistically attuned to the needs of the ethnic communities. With one office in Laval and the other in Montreal, it is involved in three core activities:

• Specialized, multilingual, services for victims available at the Montreal and Laval offices

• The Shelter (Athena’s House) provides a multilingual, safe and empowering environment for women and their children victims of family violence

• Multilingual services for communities which informs communities in their language of origin on various topics related to family and conjugal violence

 

Public Service Announcements

Public Service Announcements on Family Violence
In an effort to bring the problem of family and conjugal violence to a wider audience, the Shield of Athena co-produced an award winning public service announcement (PSA), Violence hurts us all, with Rogers CFMT, Canada’s largest multilingual television station. The PSA was broadcast in 14 languages and distributed to 30 ethnic broadcasters and specialty channels across Canada. In the nine months alone following production in 2002, the PSA had a minimum of 600 showings by CFMT and 1,500 showings, resulting in an estimated 3 million viewers. NEW--Public Service Announcements Against Sexual Assault
Consistent with its goal to help women and communities break the cycle of violence, the Shield of Athena broached another aspect of violence against women by partnering with CJNT Montreal to launch a new public service announcement (PSA) against sexual assault on November 1, 2007. This PSA is now being broadcast on CJNT in 15 languages:
