Welcome

The Shield of Athena Family Services is a non-profit community based organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and children victims of conjugal and family violence, particularly those coming from ethnic and Anglophone communities. The Shield offers services in a wide variety of languages and uses an approach which is both culturally and linguistically attuned to the needs of the ethnic communities. With one office in Laval and the other in Montreal, it is involved in three core activities:

• Specialized, multilingual, services for victims available at the Montreal and Laval offices

• The Shelter (Athena’s House) provides a multilingual, safe and empowering environment for women and their children victims of family violence

• Multilingual services for communities which informs communities in their language of origin on various topics related to family and conjugal violence

Dear Friend of the Shield of Athena,

As Honorary Co-Chairs of the 15th Annual Art Auction of the Shield of Athena Family Services, it is our pleasure to invite you to join us on Sunday, November 2,2008 at Bonsecours Market, located at 350 St. Paul Street East in Old Montreal.

This year we are honouring special guest Madam Justice Dionysia Zerbisias, who,along with her family, has been a committed and generous supporter of the Shield for many years. Since it was established in 1991, the Shield has offered a wide range of free services to victims of family violence. Answering a staggering and ever-increasing demand for its services, the Shield has developed a network at both the Montreal and Laval offices and at the dedicated La Maison d’Athéna shelter.This past year more than 10,000 people were helped through the Shield’s services and activities, including counselling at the external offices, housing at the shelter, targeted information sessions, and French language courses. The Shield distributes food and clothing to those in need, and reaches out to countless others through its multilingual community outreach programs.

The Shield is a non-profit community organization and depends greatly on fundraising events in order to provide its much-needed services. We ask you to support this year’s Annual Art Auction to ensure that it continues in its efforts to help those in need and in crisis. Won’t you please take the time to help by becoming a sponsor of the Art Auction, or by placing an advertisement in the Art Auction program book. Advertisement forms should be returned by September 23rd, so that printing deadlines are met.
